A pump is a machine that is used to make work easy in moving of liquids like water from one place to the other with the aid of pressure. Pumps have been in use since time memorial and is still being used to date. Pumps are classified into different groups all separated by how they function and where they are used.
Pumps are classified into dynamic pumps and positive displacement pumps depending on their mechanical action. A type of dynamic pumps is centrifugal pump which depend on the balance of pressure to work and achieve what is expected. The pressure in the outlet and the pressure exerted at the inlet determines how the pump will operate. Centrifugal pumps is among the first pumps to be invented in use and has been in use the longest. Centrifugal pump has had developments due to the advancement of technology.
Another type of dynamic pump is the submersible pump that operates when fully submerged in water. Also known as storm pumps, submersible pumps are meant to work while in water or the liquid being pumped. Fire hydrant pump system is a dynamic pump that is driven by diesel or electric motor to pump water. The fire hydrant system has parts that are designed to work in solidarity to ensure the liquids are pumped in a proper manner.
Another type of pumps is the positive displacement pumps which include the diaphragm pumps that are solely air driven. The air in them is made to suit different situations where the liquids are to be pumped from one place to another. These pumps can be used for different purposes including transfer of chemical liquids in dangerous environments or conditions. There are also gear pumps that transfer fluid through gears moving in and out of mesh creating a pumping action. They can pump high viscosity liquids at high pressure and so can they pump water too.
Peristaltic pumps are made for mixing and blending fluids of different types to give an end product. These type of pumps can be found in industries that deal with production of liquids that need to be mixed or blended to give out what is desired like in the food processing industries. There is also piston pump that is a type of positive displacement pump that works when the high pressure seals moves alternatively with the piston in the pump. Piston pumps are used in many applications and can also be applied in the transfer of chocolate for example.
